Yoga for Perimenopause and Menopause
Transitioning with Yoga
My relationship with yoga has transitioned. I am currently in a stage of women’s reproductive health known as perimenopause: the period of a woman’s life before the occurrence of menopause. I’ve been experiencing subtle changes that I wasn’t necessarily aware of in my hormonal health since I was 35 years old.
Yoga helps modulate mood swings and reduce depression and anxiety by helping to balance a woman’s changing hormones many of the symptoms commonly associated with (peri-menopause) and menopause, such as irritability, depression, and various aches and pains, are intensified by the inability to cope with stress. Practicing yoga’s restorative poses on a regular basis helps ease these symptoms.
I used to seek out yoga to challenge myself physically. Now I am looking for internal rejuvenation. Why? Because it’s what my body is telling me it needs. I was experiencing symptoms such as night sweats, poor sleep quality and anxiety. My daily routine needed to change from one that was “yang” or very active to one that nurtured more “yin” qualities to nourish myself rather than deplete myself.
My primary health focus is on replenishing my body from the daily busyness of life. I enjoy more restorative and alignment based styles of yoga that calm my nervous system and rebuild my body from the cumulative effects of daily stress.
